In the Interest of Childhood

Here is the article published in 2008 about the changing nature of childhood, drawing from personal experiences while growing up in the 1950s and 1960s in Michigan. I reflect on how children today have fewer opportunities for unstructured play and exploration compared to previous generations, highlighting the importance of nature-based learning and the risks of over-scheduling children's lives. I emphasize the work of Richard Louv and his book "Last Child in the Woods," which addresses the growing problem of Nature Deficit Disorder and argue that children need access to natural environments to develop essential life skills and psychological resilience. The article concludes with a call to action for parents, educators, and policymakers to create spaces and opportunities for children to experience the freedom and creativity of childhood.
